Against the Clock：跟时间赛跑，分秒必争，抢时间

俗话说得好：“一寸光阴一寸金，寸金难买寸光阴”。我们做任何事情，尤其是非常紧急的事情，一定要抓紧时间、争分夺秒。

在英语中，表达“分秒必争”可以用一个很形象的习语：against the clock，与时间作对，或者“与时间赛跑”“抢时间”。

Against是一个副词，表示“与……对抗”，against the clock就是与时间对抗，不就是抢时间吗？下面让我们通过更多的例子了解习语against the clock的含义吧！

从上面的例子可以看到，against the clock是一个标准的介词短语，基本用法是do something against the clock，争分夺秒地干某事。比如，work against the clock，争分夺秒地工作；review your lessons against the clock，抓紧复习功课。

Against the Clock的出处

时钟clock发明于14世纪，所以，against the clock这个习语的起源一定晚于14世纪。实际上，这个习语起源于19世纪，首次出现是在1857年2月的都柏林报纸The Freeman’s Journal上：“and a long series of adjournments and speaking against the clock”。但是这个习语并没有从一开始就得到广泛流传。

直到20世纪，这个习语才得以传播。1917年12月的The New York Herald报纸描写到：“All newspaper work is a struggle against the clock。”在这个例子中，against the clock的意思和今天一致，都是“争分夺秒”。
