Cloud Nine：极度狂喜

Cloud nine，云九？九朵云？这是什么意思呢？别急，让我们先来看一个例子：

"Was Helen pleased about getting that job?" "Pleased? She was on cloud nine!"

“Helen对得到那份工作满意吗？”“满意？她简直要上天了！”

从这个简单的例子可以看到，cloud nine用来形容人非常高兴，就像我们经常说的“高兴得飞起来，好像要上天了一样”。如果翻译成中文，就可以是“极度狂喜”。

剑桥词典对cloud nine的定义也非常简单：to be extremely happy and excited，也就是非常高兴，而且一定是extremely，极度，高兴得不能再高兴了。

下面让我们再通过一些具体的例子来了解cloud nine的含义和用法：

从上面的例子可以看到，我们可以用be on cloud nine或者floating on cloud nine去表达某人极度高兴，就等价于be extremely happy and excited。

Cloud Nine的出处

为什么cloud nine会表示“极度高兴”呢？

有一种说法是，有个英国气象学家将所有的云分成10种，编号从0到9，第9种类型的云就是cloud nine。而这种云看起来就像今天的积云，好像一团团棉花，非常好看，在阳光的衬托下好像天堂。所以后来人们就用cloud nine去代指非常高兴的状态。

然而，这种说法并没有实际的文献支撑。一种比较可靠的说法是出自20世纪中期的美国，在1935年出版的The underworld Speaks中有所记载：“Cloud eight, befuddled on account of drinking too much liquor.”

Cloud nine首次出现在1946年的The Oxnard Press-Courier中：“I think he has thought of everything, unless the authorities pull something new on him out of cloud nine.”

同时间还出现了各种各样的数字，从cloud 7到cloud 39。但在1960年出版的The Dictionary of American Slang中首次定义了cloud seven：“Cloud seven - completely happy, perfectly satisfied; in a euphoric state.”这就和今天cloud nine完全一致。

那为什么后来人们用cloud nine而不是cloud seven了呢？这可能与George Harrison于1987年发行的专辑Cloud Nine有关，由于其知名度而带动了cloud nine这个表达的流行。
