Barking Up the Wrong Tree：找错了原因，用错了方法

相信小伙伴们在做数学题的时候一定遇到这样的情况：自己花了好几个小时思考方法，但每次都是差一点关键步骤，一看答案才恍然大悟——原来自己的方法错了！或者是自己经历了一次失败，总结了原因，但下次还是犯了同样的错误，这时候才意识到自己原来的归因是错误的。

“找错了原因”“用错了方法”，在英语中都可以用一个非常生动的习语去表达：barking up the wrong tree。Bark就是狗叫，一只狗对着错误的树吠叫，可不就是找错了“复仇对象”，或者说“找错了原因”吗。

剑桥词典对习语barking up the wrong tree的定义是：to be wrong about the reason for something or the way to achieve something，也就是错误地归因、用错了方法、走错了路子，总之就是错误地做了一些事情，所以才说“叫错了树”。从这个意义上，该习语就等价于wrongly do something。

下面是一些例句：

从上述例子可以看到，barking up the wrong tree之前往往都有一个事件A用来引出，而这个事件A就是所做的错事。此外需要注意，barking up the wrong tree只用于进行体，可以是现在时am/are/is，也可以是过去时was/were。

Barking Up the Wrong Tree的出处

Barking up the wrong tree这个习语出自19世纪初的美国。那时社会中非常流行带着一群狗去打猎，我们甚至还能在很多电视剧中看到这样的场景。打猎的时候，狡猾的猎物，如浣熊，会诱使狗相信他们在某棵树上，狗就会不停地对着树吠叫，但实际上猎物早已逃之夭夭。所以人们就用barking up the wrong tree去形容用错了方法、找错了对象。

在1832年Kirke Paulding所著的Westward Ho!中有所记载：“so I thought I'd set him barking up the wrong tree a little, and I told him some stories that were enough to set the Mississippi a-fire”，这里的barking up the wrong tree就已经脱离了其字面意思，用作它的引申义了。

从这以后，这个习语开始迅速在美国流行起来。1834年3月的一期The Adams Sentinel报刊就使用了该习语：“Gineral you are barkin' up the wrong tree this time, for I jest see that rackoon jump to the next tree, and afore this he is a mile off in the woods.”

直到今天，barking up the wrong tree还在广泛使用。
