Here are some tips for you to know when to use an article and when not to use an article.
下面是一些关于何时使用冠词的技巧，以及何时不使用冠词
I think most people know the difference between "the" and "a".
许多人都知道 the和 a有什么不同
But in case you forgot, I'll give you an example.
假设你忘了，我给你举个例子
So I want to wear a pocket square.
请带上口袋方巾
These are called pocket squares.
这就是口袋方巾
I want to wear a pocket square.
请带上口袋方巾
I don't know which one I want to wear.
不知要带哪一个呢
I want to wear the green pocket square.

So as soon as I know which one I'm talking about, then I use the word "the".
如果我知道哪个是我想要的，我就在前面加上 the
But if I don't know, then I use the word "a".

That's why the word "the" is called the definite article.

The word 'definite' means I'm talking about a specific one.

And the word 'indefinite' means that we're not sure.

Now, a lot of people make the mistake between the words 'a' and 'an'.

I'm just talking about something in general.

It's a general fact. I'm not talking about any specific cookies.

Also we don't use articles with non specific uncountable nouns.
不可数名词与冠词也不一致
So if you can't count it, that's an uncountable noun.
不能计数的单词是不能计数的名词
For example, water.
以水为例
You can't count water.
不能计算水的含水量
But it still take a singular verb.
但是仍然使用单数形式
So water is tasteless.
水没有味道。
Also we don't use articles with names, languages and countries.
我们一般不在名字语言国家使用冠词
For example, Amy spoke Spanish in Cuba.
古巴的艾米说西班牙语
We have three nouns, Amy, Spanish, Cuba,
下面是 Amy/Spanish/Cuba这三个名词
but we don't have any articles.
但没有冠词。
Some countries have the word 'the'.

For example, the United States or the Netherlands,

but most countries don't.

So here are some examples of when you should use an article.

You can use articles with singular nouns.

Here we have two singular nouns, girl and flower.

Use an article with specific plural nouns.

So specific, we know which one we're talking about.

And plural, more than one.

The cookies you made are delicious.

OK so here we have specific cookies.
这小甜饼很特别
Here we have non specific cookies.

So the cookies you made are delicious.

Also use an article with specific uncountable nouns.

So the water is too cold.
这水很凉
But here we have water is tasteless.

But here, the water, the water is too cold for me to swim.

I don't like swimming in cold water.
